Fundamentals Of Green Hosting

The internet usage is doubling every year in the US and Europe and growing at a rate of 400 to 1000% every year worldwide. It is estimated that the bill to power all the servers on the internet is around $7 billion with a b. If the usage keeps rising at the present rate, then the web hosting industry will catch up with the airline industry in terms of pollution. This being the case, eco-friendly hosting is coming increasingly in demand.
The web hosting industry is slowly but surely joining the "green" movement. Many companies now boast an environmentally friendly program of energy consumption and recycling.

"Green" hosting is a kind of program that uses nature-powered sources to power their hosting services. As we all know, hosting servers are computers and require energy to run. They are on 24/7 365 days a year for the most part, except for those short periods when they undergo maintenance. Thus they consume a lot of energy, and so most of the top web hosting companies are increasingly joining the movement to do their part to use renewable energies.
Not all green companies generate their own renewable energy. Some buy "green" certificates and use the green energy generated by power companies. Thus they do their part to reduce the earth's carbon and greenhouse emissions.
There are other ways that hosting companies are green.
As said, they purchase energy credits to compensate for their use of the energy they pull off the regular grid.
They also set up their servers so that they run more efficiently, powering them down slightly when the demand is low, as usually happens on holidays and weekends. Many have installed state of the art cooling equipment to get them to run cooler with less power consumption.
In addition, many have programs for employees to take part in, where they telecommute in order to save energy at the office, and others vanpool to save gas.
They also have programs to reduce the amount of paper used in the office in an effort to eventually have paperless offices, thus saving on trees and waste, and helping the environment in general.
Green hosting can sometimes cost a little more than regular hosting. But the difference is very minor, especially when you take out an extended hosting plan of 2 years or more. Thus for the environmentally conscious client, it is still a good deal, added to the knowledge that by hosting with them, you are also doing your part to preserve the planet.
